We’re Making Progress – Let’s Keep It Going!

Since the Des Moines City Council approval of a consultant to develop the Transportation Master Plan, the Sam Schwartz Transportation Consultants firm has been hired to complete the plan. Thanks to the efforts of the Douglas Avenue Coalition (DAC), they are starting on our side of the city and focusing first on Douglas Avenue between Merle Hay Road and the Des Moines River. Members of the DAC met with the City and Sam Schwartz consultants on February 8th to discuss the plan and share what we believe needs to be addressed along Douglas Avenue. The team began collecting data beginning the week of February 13th with the help of Kirkham Michael Engineers who have staff on-site collecting traffic counts, average speeds, observing turning patterns, etc. The team will then make recommendations on street cross sections and lane configurations, intersection changes, pedestrian crossings, and any other challenges and opportunities. We see the need to improve walkability and calm traffic, especially at the east end of Douglas Avenue.

Meanwhile, the city is wrapping up a draft RFP (request for proposal) for a consultant that will develop the master corridor plan for Douglas Avenue between Merle Hay Road and the Des Moines River. The DAC has already secured $25,000 in funding from Polk County with additional money pledged by the city to fully fund the consultation. We expect this consultation to begin shortly after the conclusion of the Transportation Master Plan and to integrate the traffic plan recommendations. The DAC board of directors met on February 17th to review the RFP and provide our suggestions to the city. Stay tuned for further developments! Thank you for your support and interest in improving our business corridor!
